Iceland - Day 5 and Days 1- 4

Iceland - Day 5

Today we drove in the the Vatnajokull National Park which covers 13% of Iceland and is Europe’s largest park.
We drove for miles viewing Skaftafell, (the largest glacier in Iceland and Europe), and the flood plains where farms once existed but were destroyed by floods breaking their way underneath the glacier and where volcanic action in 1996 destroyed huge bridges.
Then we stopped at a lagoon at the foot of the Jokuilsarion glacier where several movies used the lagoon as a shooting location. (Die Another Day, Tomb Raider, Batman Begins)

For the record:  Days 1 to 4:

Days 1 & 2

Arrived in Reykjavik Sunday morning to find that it was a good day to have a quick introductory trip to the city, get some idea of what we’d be doing from our guide and get a few winks. Walkabout in the afternoon meant exploring in the windy mist and finding that the Protestant influence meant that most stores and services would be open on Monday.  Sunday was essentially a day of rest.
With Monday came our car,  a Suzuki Swift, our itinerary and time to explore the area and become accustomed to driving it.  We started out by visiting the Blue Lagoon, a thermal Lagoon which provides hot water and electricity for a city of 20,000 people and is a treasured hot mineral water lagoon which  has curative powers, particularly for people with psoriasis. The area all around is lava from the 12th century which destroyed much of the life on the island - here astronauts came to train for moon walking.

Day 3.

Started with the planned itinerary:

The Ring Road Self Drive Tour which began with The Golden Circle which took us to the most visited and most celebrated landmarks of Iceland, Pingvellir National Park and its rift valley, the Geyir and Strokkur hot springs geysers and the Gullfoss waterfall.

Day 4.

Highlights included the Skogarfoss waterfall and several other breathtaking waterfalls, the volcano which erupted in 2010 disrupting air traffic world wide, driving by the huge glacier Myraksjokull and visiting the black sand beaches at Vik.
